William Kenneth Armitage CBE was born in Leeds in 1916. He studied at the Leeds College of Arts and the Slade School of Fine Art. His striking style was evident as early as 1952. He was featured in a 1964 documentary film "Five British Sculptors (Work and Talk)" by American film maker Warren Forma. He has exhibited Worldwide and is recognised as one of the major British sculptors of the 20th Century.

During the 1970's he became interested in the combination of drawing and sculpture. He shifted from figure to nature creating a series of sculptures and drawings of oak trees in Richmond Park, London
