An original oil on board by Joan Gillchrest (1918-2008) signed with initials (lower left) - 20cm x 19cm

Joan Gillchrest was born and trained in London. She moved to Mousehole, Cornwall in 1958 and is one of the best known naive painters of Cornwall of the 20th Century. Hailing from an illustrious family, her Great-Grandfather, George, was the architect of St Pancras station, while her uncle, Sir Giles, designed Battersea and Bankside power stations.

Joan had her first solo show in 1969 and thereafter at galleries across Cornwall and later the UK. Her paintings are among the most avidly collected of any of the post war St Ives school artists' work.

Given as a gift, this piece has a note on the reverse that is thought to be from Joan to a friend.
